Chapter Twenty-Three

Agent Flanagan winked at her through the SUV window, but Cam ignored the tall, slim redheaded junior agent riding shotgun with Mark Houston. She had to bite her tongue, and she clenched her fingers to keep from swearing or flipping him off. She was a TEAM junior agent now, and Mark even smiled like he was proud of her. It was funny knowing she’d made two friends in the office. That seemed to tip the scales a little in her favor. She almost wished she had a TEAM badge. Beck had one. He wasn’t wearing it now, but she’d seen it on his belt. It made him someone. She wanted to be someone, too.

Just as Mark Houston cranked the wheel away from the curb, he leaned past Flanagan and called out, “Good job, Cam. Keep it up.”

She stood there dumbfounded. He’d actually complimented her out loud. In front of Beck and Flanagan, whose first name she couldn’t remember, because, well, he was new, and she hadn’t cared who came and went at TEAM HQ. Until now.

Beck hip-checked her, nearly knocking her into the curb as the SUV roared away. “Told you he likes you.”

She wanted to respond with something snarky like, ‘Well, of course. I always do good work,’ but that cat was out of the bag. Beck knew better. Still... Cam swallowed the strange, pleasant feeling swelling in her chest and simply replied, “Let’s get back to work.”

To which Beckam asked, “Why would your mother shoot your dad?”

Oh, that. Cam’s cheeks ballooned as she blew out a big breath. “Because Alan always hated him. They never got along. I’m just surprised she used a gun. Thought she would’ve used a knife and cut him into little pieces like she always said she would.”

Beck seemed to take that in stride. “Why’d she hate him?”

“Money. He never gave her enough, least that’s what she said. You have to understand, Alana has expensive tastes. Only the best, she always used to say. Why settle for less, another one of her rules.”

“You need to know Alex is on your side,” he said quietly.

She turned and looked at him then. “No, he isn’t. The only reason he gave me this job is because of that FBI creep, Director Chase. He pawned me off on Stewart to get back at me. That much I know for sure.”

“I can’t speak to what Tucker Chase hates or not, but Cam. Stop.” Beck raised his palm as he came to a halt. “Alex might be fed up with the way you treat everyone in the office, but you’ve earned that bad rep, and it’s up to you to change it. Trust me when I tell you that he’s not going to fire you. I’ve seen him in action. Alex is the best guy in the world to have on your side.”

She caught the earnestness in Beck’s tone. “Why? What’s going on? Why do I need him on my side?”

The penetrating look in his eyes turned her blood to ice.
